The second I walked into the back door of Grandma’s house (you never walked in the front door of my Grandmas’ houses), I felt loved. That is a feeling I will never forget. Embraced with love and appreciation, smiles and hugs!
One Saturday, I was staying with my Grandma Helen. Don’t remember why it was just me, but I was solo that day with Grandma. She said, “Jennie, do you want a new dress?” Now, with Grandma Helen, that might mean that she saw an ad in the Daily Oklahoman for a cute dress from John A. Brown’s that she thinks would be perfect for you. But that day, she was talking about making me a dress. “Let’s run up to Hancock’s.” Well, the fabric store was not always my favorite place to pass the HOURS while my Mom, Grandma or Aunt Jo would flip through pattern books. However, this day, it was just Grandma and me and she wanted to make me a dress.
That is exactly how the day went, “Jennie, pick out a pattern.” Then it was, “Jennie, pick out your favorite fabric.” I felt like a princess! We went home and Grandma cut out that dress and made it in one day! When my Mom picked me up that day, I had a pretty new dress. It is a day and a dress etched in memory along with all the other warm and cozy memories that include my Grandmas.
That is what Grandmas do. They love you, support you and make you feel important and special.
